Sharyland FCCLA Produces Future for Members in Leadership Workshop

Sharyland High School hosted the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) Fall Leadership Workshop on Saturday, October 20th, 2012. The All-Valley Fall Leadership Workshop was organized and conducted by FCCLA State officer, Carlos Cruz, and Region V Officer, Alexis Montemayor, both of Sharyland plus Region V Officer Clarrisa DeLeon, La Villa. Also helping were the local Sharyland FCCLA Officers and members under the direction of Advisors Mrs. Mary Jo Brisnahan, Ms. Norma Meza, Ms. Hilda Rodriguez and Mrs. Mary Jane Laing. Twelve (12) different high schools containing sixteen (16) Chapters, attended with 283 FCCLA Members attended. Schools attending were Edinburg Career Center, La Villa FCCLA, Mercedes FCCLA, Nikkie Rowe FCCLA Chapter 1 and 2, San Benito FCCLA, Sotomayor Future Leaders FCCLA, Valley View Tigers FCCLA, PSJA Bear Chapter, Rio Hondo, PIHS FCCLA, Progreso, Weslaco East Chapter 1 and 2, and Weslaco High Chapter 1.
The Fall Leadership Workshop was held to inform Valley members about FCCLA and provide opportunities for recognition. The first general session was in the SHS auditorium, Mrs. Cynthia Sandoval-Wilson , SHS Principal, gave greetings and the SHS Army ROTC Color Guard presented the Flags under direction of Col. Welch. Students then took Leadership Enhancement Opportunity (LEO) Proficiency Tests. There were 29 students that received gold, and, 51
Silver and 31 Bronze for those LEO Tests.
There were nine (9) different sessions presented and students picked three (3) out of the nine (9) offered. Sessions that they could pick from were: Leadership, Families First, Financial Fitness, Competitive Events, Students Taking On Prevention (STOP the Violence), Student body, and Power of One, Families Acting on Community Traffic Safety (FACTS), and Officer Candidate Productions. Each session had a Television theme plus different fun activities for the students attending each of these nine (9) sessions.

During the Second and Final Session schools competed in a FCCLA Quiz Bowl by answering FCCLA fact questions. Winning first place in the Quiz Bowl was Sheena Caramba from Nikkie Rowe High School, Myriam Garza from Sharyland High School placed second place and Roxanna Garcia from Weslaco East High School took third place. Students were also recognized for their outstanding leadership skills. Banner contest winners were announced; Valley View High School won first place, Advisor Norma Garcia, Weslaco East High School second place, Advisors Mrs. Yolanda Sanchez and Mrs. Lupita Gonzales, and Nikkie Rowe High School won third place, Advisor Mrs. Delia Mendoza. Judging the Banner Contest was FCCLA Alumni Member Ms. Karla Montemayor of Mission.
The workshop was a big success; FCCLA Members will utilize knowledge gained though leadership experiences to develop a solid foundation for their future.
